Netflix is expanding its 4K content options, with the critically acclaimed Breaking Bad to join House of Cards in being made available for 4K streaming this June.
Although having marked out plans to give Breaking Bad a 4K boost back at CES, this announcement is Netflix’s first confirmation of exactly when all five seasons of the Sony owner series would go 4K.
Netflix’s 4K content is available at no extra cost to subscribers, although users are of course required to have a costly 4K TV. As such the service is accessible to a very limited percentage of the subscriber base.
Although a taking Walter White to a 3140 x 2160 resolution is a significant step forward, there is currently a very limited portion of content that is available for 4K streaming. Netflix, however, has promised to continue its pursuit of 4K shows and movies.
“We will do Breaking Bad from Sony but we will do all of the Originals that we do that have a style that benefits from that better video quality.”
He added: “You will see us license more and more content in 4K as studios start to produce that.
“We have House of Cards but we are also doing licensing in terms of 4K content so you will see a couple of other titles that I would characterise as iCandy documentaries – they look really good and they really show off the capabilities of these displays.”
Despite offering heavy backing to the 4K movement, Peters has admitted that the beyond HD content will remain a very niche aspect of the Netflix offering for some time yet.
“It won’t be a lot – we are talking stuff that’s new or stuff that’s been remastered off of film – but you will see more and more,” he said.
“It will start small, but it will get bigger and bigger.”
