Netflix’s newest feature could halt hours of aimless browsing

Are you one of those folks who spends more aimlessly clicking around Netflix menus than watching the rich array of movies and TV shows? Yes, us too.

The streaming giant feels our collective pain and wants to do something about it.

Today Netflix announced video previews are coming to its television interface through enabled devices like set-top boxes, Smart TVs and set-top boxes.

The company says these previews aren’t traditional trailers, but more a snapshot of what the viewer can expect from the title.

They are specially designed video synopses that help members make faster and more confident decisions by quickly highlighting the story, characters and tone of a title,” wrote Stephen Garcia, Director of Product Innovation for TV & Chris Jaffe, VP of Product Innovation on the firm’s media site.

“In developing this experience, our testing showed that people watched more of a story, demonstrating these previews helped them browse less and watch more.”

The company reckons it has less than 90 seconds to capture our imagination, so hopes these previews will assist.

The video previews are launching globally today and will roll out over the next few weeks.
