People’s sneaky Netflix password-sharing practices revealed in new survey

A highly interesting (if not especially precise) survey has shed some light on people’s Netflix password-sharing habits.

It’s no secret that a lot of people access the streaming service using somebody’s else account. In fact, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings once described password-sharing as a “positive thing”.

Why? Because he believes they’ll be likely to become paying subscribers later down the line.

According to a survey of “thousands” of Netflix users conducted by Exstreamist, almost half of the people (44%) who admitted to accessing the service using somebody else’s login details (891 people) said they do so without the account holder knowing about it. Sneaky.

34% said the account holder was aware of it (less sneaky), and 22% weren’t sure either way (possibly trying to make themselves feel better about their sneakiness).

Parents appear to be the most generous (or careless) with their Netflix passwords, with 22% of Netflix freeloaders saying they use their mum or dad’s login details.

Friends (20%), partners (17%), former roommates (13%) and − to our great amusement − ex-lovers (13%) come next, with siblings (a fittingly stingy 3%) and “other” (12%) completing the table.
