Netflix original films are coming to a cinema probably not near you

A selection of Netflix’s forthcoming original movies will debut in select movie theatres on the same day they’ll hit the streaming service.

Netflix has announced an agreement with iPic Entertainment, the owners of luxury cinemas in the United States, to show 10 movies, starting on Friday.

The agreement covers the theatres in the LA and New York locations with an option to also bring them to the 13 other screens nationwide, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Friday’s debut movie is The Siege of Jadotville, while Mascots from Christopher Guest will open on October 13.

iPic has gained recognition for providing luxury viewing experiences with menu items like lobsters rolls, while also providing blankets for members.

iPic, which charges around $30 for tickets, is about to open a new NYC location which features “pod” seating which offers patrons enclosed booths.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Netflix films have hit the big screen. Beasts of No Nation enjoyed a limited release last year.

However, signing a distribution deal with a cinema chain is a much bigger step towards Netflix realising its Hollywood ambitions.

Will we see the company challenge the traditional studios in time? Would you pay that much to watch a Netflix movie that’s available on your smart TV?
