Netflix has updated its TV apps for the first time in two years

Netflix has unveiled a rare update for its TV apps, which will be the first of its kind in approaching two years.

The video subscription service last updated its TV apps in late 2013, but it has just announced a new one.

Now when you select a title in one of the revised TV apps, it will commence playing in the background while pertinent information remains layered over the top. Apparently, this is intended to give you even more information to help confirm your choice.

“We’re letting the content speak for itself by providing a more immersive and cinematic experience that best represents the capabilities and expectations of today’s TVs,” says Netflix.

“Video is a rich medium for storytelling and we’ve found bringing video playback into the content selection experience makes it easier to find something great to watch.”

Essentially, then, the latest Netflix TV app is the same as before – it has simply removed a click from the process of selecting and starting up a video. Still, over the course of a week, that’s potentially a lot of clicks.

It also gives Netflix more of a traditional TV flavour, as content is now on the screen more or less instantly when you select the “channel.”

This new Netflix TV app update has started rolling out globally, so keep an eye out for the change over the coming days.
