The rapid expansion of original content on Netflix will continue in 2016, with the company announcing that 31 series will be produced in-house next year.
The streaming giant debuted 16 original series in 2015, so it’s pretty much doubling the amount of first-run programming hitting the app.
“It’s not just a lot of volume. This is quality stuff,” the boss told Broadcasting Cable. “Our shows are among the most-viewed on television.”
The increasing reliance on original content to supplement Netflix’s archives comes as it faces increasing competition from other standalone streaming services.
Crown jewel networks in the US, HBO and Showtime, are now offering access to programming without a cable subscription.
Amazon’s Prime Instant Video service also continues to improve, while Now TV in the UK has also democratised access to Sky’s premium content.
Netflix’s most recent additions to the original programming line up include Marvel’s Jessica Jones and Master of None starring Aziz Ansari. Both have earned plenty of critical acclaim.

As an interesting aside, Sarandos admitted Netflix isn’t chasing after sports content to place on its streaming network, but didn’t rule out interest in the future.
He said, “It isn’t a core viewing strategy for us,” but did quip that Netflix could start its own sports league to bypass the high premiums placed on content.
He added: “That might be interesting, but that’s not what we’re chasing.”
