Netflix confirms streaming of Breaking Bad and Originals in 4K

Netflix has confirmed that all future Netflix Originals TV shows and the critically acclaimed Breaking Bad series will be available in 4K resolution through the streaming service.

At CES 2014, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings confirmed that all Netflix originals including House of Cards Season 2, will be shot and edited at 4K resolution. Hastings also confirmed that Breaking Bad will be able to view in 4K resolution from the streaming service.

Netflix announced that 4K streaming was in the works last year, while Sony revealed its plans to remaster Breaking Bad in 4K back in January 2013.

A trial of 4K Netflix began in November 2013, but exactly when it will come to the UK is not yet clear. As a US-based, US-focused company, it’s likely we have a wait ahead of us.

The technology behind Netflix’s 4K streaming is impressive, though. Hastings claims 4K streaming is possible with a connection under 15Mbps. That’s well within the reach of a a good home broadband connection, as long as you’re not too far away from your exchange. This is down to the intense levels of data compression involved in the codecs that deliver Netflix’s 4K stream.

We’ll be back with more information on Netflix’s 4K roll-out as it surfaces.
