Nero In Seventh Heaven

Blu-ray and HD DVD now supported in a new 18 application suite.

With the ongoing war between Blu-ray and HD DVD readers could be forgiven for shaking their heads, tutting, waving a single nonchalant finger in the air and stating that neither has even hit the market yet. Well, that hasn’t stopped burning guru Nero from already supporting both in version seven of its famous software suite.

Given that there are now 18 (count em) applications which make up Nero 7, the software has also broadened its scope quite a bit. Of these, the biggest addition is “Nero Home”, a new TV and PC multimedia programme which creates a library of a user’s digital media files and offers advanced playback features such as time shifting, a TV wizard and support for a remote control. On top of this, a second new app, “Nero Scout”, does what its name suggests and provides instant access to a user’s media files from any Nero application and Windows Explorer.

Now whenever companies focus further a field their own core functionality tends to suffer, but Nero still seems to be keeping things pretty tight. For a start, not only does 7 support the aforementioned Blu-ray and HD DVD media a good 4-6 months before either is due on shop shelves, but many of the burning and backup tools have all been upgraded. For example, BackItUp 2 now lets users run full or incremental backups which can be scheduled to begin at login, a specific time and date or handled remotely over FTP.

On the acoustic side of things a major improvement is that new features and applications support 5.1 and 7.1 audio recording, editing and mixing, along with 32bit audio. Enthusiasts can now incorporate beats, sound sequences and melodies into audio projects with surround sound mixing. If that wasn’t enough, the entire interface has also been given a once over to make it more intuitive with all 18 apps accessible at any time.

Boxed versions of Nero 7 will be available immediately for 69.99 euros, with an online downloadable version (59.99 euros) from the company’s site ready from 24 October.
