Mozilla Firefox OS smartphones launched for developers

Broweser specialst Mozilla has unveiled two new Firefox OS preview phones, with the handsets intended for use by developers.

Nicknamed Keon and Peak, the Firefox OS developer handsets are being developed with Spanish smartphone startup Geeksphone and Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica.

Kicking off the collection, the Firefox OS Keon is a budget handset offering, featuring a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 3-megapixel camera and 4GB of integrated storage. A 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 processor, 1580mAh battery, microSD expansion and connectivity options in the form of microUSB, Wi-Fi and GPS also make appearances in the Firefox OS brimmed handset’s specs.

The Mozilla Firefox OS Peak on the other hand is, according to Geeksphone, the more powerful handset, with a 4.3-inch qHD IPS touchscreen display lining up alongside an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a second, 2-megapixel snapper, up front. Also sporting 4GB of inbuilt storage, again expandable via microSD, the Firefox OS Peak will feature an upgraded 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, a 1800mAh battery and Wi-Fi and micro USB connectivity options.

In a blog post on its hacks.mozilla.org site, Mozilla outlined its belief that developers will aid their journey of bringing the power of the web to mobile devices.

“Developer preview phones will help make the mobile Web more accessible to more people,” Mozilla added. “Developers are critical to the Web and to Mozilla’s mission to make the Web accessible to everyone.”

Mozilla aims to develop a truly open smartphone environment, based on “open standards and open technologies” according to the blog posted on their site.

Available via Geeksphone in February, pricing details of the two handsets has yet to be released. Until then, Firefox OS can be accessed via the browser-based Firefox OS or install the operating system on their own hardware.
