Mozilla launches Focus by Firefox ad-blocker for iOS
Apple’s iOS 9 paved the way for ad-blockers on the iPhone, and Mozilla is the latest entrant.
Mozilla has launched Focus, a new app that makes use of the iOS 9 ad-blocker API.
Focus is available on the App Store starting today, and will give Safari users a range of customisable ad-blocking features.
“Focus by Firefox is a content blocker for Safari that improves the privacy and performance of your mobile browsing experience by blocking analytics, social and advertising trackers,” explains Mozilla.
“
Focus is different that some of its rivals in that it lets users choose the types of page content allowed on your browser.
However, do note that there is a caveat to Focus by Firefox, as Mozilla explains:
“Currently, Focus by Firefox only works with Safari, not Firefox for iOS. This was not our choice – Apple has chosen to make content blocking unavailable to third party browsers on iOS. We are exploring how we can provie this feature on Firefox for iOS and will deliver it as soon as it’s possible.”

The app weighs in at just 2.9MB, and requires your Apple device to be running iOS 9.0 or later.
To set up Focus, install the app and then tap ‘Settings’ on your device. Then choose ‘Safari’, select ‘Content Blockers’, and enable Focus by Firefox.
Mozilla also pledged to offer a “variety of options” to let you customise your lists and better control web content “in the future”.
