Motorola has confirmed that it won’t commit to monthly security patches for the new Moto Z and Moto G4.
A statement has been released by Motorola revealing that the company finds it too “difficult” to pledge monthly security updates for its latest flagship handset. The US tech giant provided the comment to ArsTechnica, who called out the decision as “unacceptable” and “insecure”:
“Motorola understands that keeping phones up to date with Android security patches is important to our customers.

Motorola’s Moto G4, launched earlier this year
Due to increasing fragmentation of Android, device security has become a significant concern for the platform. That’s why in 2015, Google committed to monthly security updates for Android. Other manufacturers quickly followed suit, including big names like Samsung, LG, and BlackBerry.
Worse still, Motorola’s track record for updates is less than stellar. As ZDNet notes, last year’s Moto X Pure Edition has just received the May security patch, while the previous update came in February. By contrast, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge already has the July update.
Motorola unveiled the Moto Z on June 9, 2016, with the company lauding the phone as its flagship model for the year. Over in the US, customers have the option of picking up a Moto Z Droid Edition, which is a time-limited Verizon Wireless exclusive.
