A Moto Z2 Play successor is long overdue – and it would appear that Lenovo-owned Motorola thinks so too, as a series of case renders for a so-called Moto Z3 Play have surfaced online, casting a bright light on the design of the elusive handset.
Let’s start with the most obvious difference. Motorola has moved the fingerprint reader to the right-hand side of the Moto Z3 Play, rather mounting it on the front as was the case on the Moto Z2 Play, hitting at the introduction of an edge-to-edge screen with at least an 18:9 aspect ratio – like the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus.
Another notable difference comes in the form of the camera. The Moto Z2 Play was armed with a single-sensor setup, while it would appear the Moto Z3 Play is equipped with a dual-camera. And it’s also missing the beloved 3.5mm headphone port, presumably stripped in favour of a single USB-C slot to save on space.
Building on the modular option – Moto Mods – that made an appearance on the Moto Z2 Play, among several other of the firm’s smartphones, the Moto Z3 Play is armed with a set of magnetic connection pins, which can be used to attach several intriguing add-ons, including a heart-rate monitor and a 360-degree camera.

There’s no word on what changes Motorola has made under the hood, let alone when the Moto Z3 Play will be announced – though some believe it could be unveiled at a dedicated event as soon as next month, alongside the much-rumoured Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus, and maybe even the Moto Z3 Force.
