The Moto Z is the first mainstream smartphone release to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack from its hardware.
The official spec sheet for the Verizon Droid version of the phone reveals the need for a USB Type-C adapter in order to use exiting wired headphones.
The listing states: “USB-C port for headphones, charging and data transfer, 3.5 mm to USB-C headphone port adapter included.”
The absence of the jack has enabled Moto to shrink the device down to a remarkable 5.2-inches, making it the thinnest flagship in the world.

While fringe manufacturers like LeEco have already made the leap, Moto is the first major maker to take the plunge.
Apple is reportedly planning to make the move with the iPhone 7 release later this year, Lenovo has beaten it to the punch.
Now another big player in the smartphone market has taken the plunge, it may even take some of the heat off Apple for what is sure to be a controversial move.
In the case of the Moto Z, the device will ship with an adapter, although users could make use of USB Type-C headphones already on the market.
