Microsoft and Mojang have announced Minecraft: Education Edition, a subscription-based version of the game to be used in schools.
Minecraft: Education Edition will replace MinecrafteEdu, the existing educational mod currently available for the best-selling franchise.
It will be the first version of the game built specifically for schools, and will work on an account-based subscription model.
Microsoft will charge schools and institutes $5 per year for an individual account to make use of the game.
If you already happen to own the original MinecraftEdu, you will be given your first year of Education Edition for no extra charge.

Education Edition features all of the content you would expect from the original Minecraft, along with some unique features.
You will able to take pictures of the world using an in-game camera, and teachers will be able to freely restrict certain settings if they wish to.
The new edition will be frequently updated with the help and feedback of professional educators, who should know best how to take advantage of the game’s tools.

It’s pretty amazing how gaming is having such a positive impact on education. We’re a little jealous that we never got to jam on Minecraft back in school.
