The new Microsoft Surface Pro tablet will have more storage space than was initially projected, it’s been revealed.
Microsoft’s new tablet launches in the US tomorrow, and it’s been revealed that it will come with just under 7GB of extra storage space compared to what was initially expected.
Microsoft has come in for considerable flak following the release of specifications for its Surface Pro tablet. Whilst the high-end Windows 8 tablet comes with a healthy 128GB solid state hard drive, initial estimates suggested that it would only have 83GB of that available to the user.
You can attribute that to the (relatively) heavyweight nature of the full-Windows 8 OS it runs on.
However, following a spot of investigation from ZDNet, it turns out that Microsoft has undersold the capabilities of its new flagship device. The report found that the Microsoft Surface Pro actually comes with 89.7GB of free storage – some 7GB more than expected.
What’s the reason for this increase?
According to the report, “A source inside Microsoft tells me the employee who confirmed the numbers did so using pre-production machines that contained different disk images and debug code that is different from final shipping units that will be on sale beginning this weekend.”
So essentially, the final retail model of the Microsoft Surface Pro will be a far more efficient device than the early pre-production models.
The report also came with another way to create some extra space on the Microsoft Surface Pro – delete the recovery partition, which accounts for 7.81GB of storage space.
The result of all these savings – a 128GB Microsoft Surface Pro has more storage space free than a 128GB Apple MacBook Air.
