Surface Headphones 2 are official: Here’s everything you need to know

Microsoft has finally revealed the Surface Headphones 2. Here’s what you need to know about Microsoft’s newest ANC headphones

We initially thought that the Surface Headphones 2 would surface (ahem) at Microsoft’s New York event last year. But they didn’t even make a cursory appearance.

It turns out that Microsoft had been holding the headphones back until now. The original Surface Headphones were decent and the sequel looks to have improved in a few areas. Let’s see if Microsoft has nailed the formula this time out.

Surface Headphones 2 — release date

At its Surface event, Microsoft announced that the Surface Headphones 2 will go on sale in the US and UK on May 12.

Surface Headphones 2 — price

Microsoft’s pricing of the Headphones 2 is a drop down from the original. The Surface Headphones had a price of $349.99, the Surface Headphones 2 only cost $249. A UK price has been announced and it puts them at £239.99, which is right in the middle of our expectations.

Surface Headphones 2 — design and features

The original Surface Headphones were grey. Very, very grey or as Microsoft likes to call it, Classic Platinum.

Thankfully Microsoft has heard our calls and added a different colour. That colour option is black.

It’s not unexpected, as a black version was spotted in a leaked promotional video from 2019. And we have said before that even black would be better than grey, and it is. Just a little bit.

The Surface Headphones were a robust pair of headphones and expect that level of build quality to continue over. Microsoft says they are designed to slip “comfortably over your ears”, with the earcups now able to rotate 180 degrees. Considering how comfortable they already were, more comfort would not go amiss.

Microsoft has also stated that it has improved sound quality, we assume through the upgrade to aptX/Bluetooth 5 from Bluetooth 4.2 . Battery life has been boosted from 15 hours to 20 hours with ANC on. That puts them around the Bose NC 700 and Sennheiser Momentum Wireless 3.

The design and look remain the same, with the rotary dials on the earcups that worked extremely well on the original present here for volume and ANC adjustment. Noise cancellation can be changed via three levels, and there are 13 levels of ambient noise control.

Otherwise, expect the same features the original Surface Headphones, although we’re hoping that Cortana integration is actually built-in, rather than the fumbled implementation of the original.
