Microsoft SkyDrive gets renamed to OneDrive after court order

Microsoft has changed the name of its cloud storage service, SkyDrive, to OneDrive following a court order.

The original SkyDrive name was found to infringe a BSkyB trademark back in June 2013 and was ordered by a UK court to change the name.

Microsoft agreed to the court ruling without appealing and was allowed to use the SkyDrive name for a brief period in order to allow for the transition to take place.

“Of course, changing the name of a product as loved as SkyDrive wasn’t easy. We believe the new OneDrive name conveys the value we can deliver for you and best represents our vision for the future.”

Sky believed consumers could confuse Microsoft’s SkyDrive service with its broadband and cable TV offerings, so now Microsoft has opted for OneDrive as the name for its cloud storage service.

The judgement actually only applied to the countries inside the EU, but Microsoft has changed the service’s name to OneDrive across the world, to ensure brand consistency.

Although you might think the new OneDrive name is a nod to the Xbox One, Microsoft claims the name is because its service aims to be the one solution to your storage needs.

“One place for all of your photos and videos. One place for all your documents. One place that is seamlessly connected across all the devices you use. You want OneDrive for everything in your life.”

Anyone currently using SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro will see the service continue as normal, with all content available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business respectively.

Those looking to join OneDrive will be able to “soon” and you can register your interest on the OneDrive website.

“We are excited about what is to come, and can’t wait to share more.”
