Microsoft’s Instagram teaser: Is this the new Surface Book?

Earlier this year, app developer Subhan Chemburkar visited the Microsoft offices and spotted placeholder cards for an upcoming Surface device.

It’s been almost a year since the first Surface Book launched, and many concluded Microsoft was planning a new model for the end of 2017.

And now, it seems Microsoft has taken to Instagram to tease the rumoured Surface Book 2, posting a photo showing off what looks to be the new hinge on the device, as spotted by WindowsCentral.

Previous reports suggested the company was working on improving the ‘fulcrum’ hinge on the original Surface Book, which left a considerable gap between the screen and keyboard when shut.

The new device is said to come with a more traditional hinge that will allow the screen to sit flush with the keyboard once the notebook is closed.

It comes following a report earlier this month, also from Windows Central, which claimed Microsoft was indeed working on a Surface Book redesign featuring an improved hinge.

The new image posted to Instagram also appears to reveal a new black finish on the device, rather than the silver color of the current Surface Book.

But Windows Central reports this could simply be the colour assigned to internal prototypes, and it’s not yet confirmed that the alleged Surface Book 2 will arrive in black when and if it launches.

What’s more, the site says the image is from an “internal Microsoft ‘sizzler’ reel meant to demonstrate some ideas for the new Surface Book 2”.

Microsoft has not yet confirmed the Surface Book 2 in any real capacity beyond this teaser image, and it could be that the shot relates to something else.

But it certainly makes sense that this is the Surface Book 2, considering previous reports and speculation. Microsoft is expected to reveal more very soon, so stay tuned.
