Microsoft preparing Xbox Music cloud locker service

Microsoft is said to be readying a cloud-based music locker service for Xbox Music, which will rival similar efforts from Google and Amazon.

The new service, which is being referred to as OneDrive Music Locker, would effectively combine Microsoft’s Xbox Music and OneDrive services.

Chinese website LiveSino has spotted references to a “OneDrive Music folder” in OneDrive’s source code. Apparently, this folder allows you to upload your locally stored music files to it, and then play them back from any device through the Xbox Music app.

Xbox Music already lets you stream music to your device through the Xbox Music Pass subscription service. However, these only include tracks that Microsoft has on its servers already.

This new offering would match Google Play Music and Amazon Cloud Player in enabling you to add your own files to the equation.

With Xbox Music apps now available on iOS and Android as well as Microsoft’s own Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, and Xbox devices, the company clearly has plans to push Xbox Music as a strong stand-alone subscription music service.

It’s not clear when we’ll see this music locker feature added to Xbox Music, but the fact that references are cropping up on onedrive.com suggests that Microsoft is in the process of testing it. A proper rollout probably isn’t too far away.
