Microsoft lets slip Edge browser extensions

Microsoft has accidentally revealed that it is nearly ready to implement extensions into its Edge web browser.

Windows 10 represented a new start for Microsoft’s web browsing approach. It completely ditched the decades-old Internet Explorer and introduced the all-new Microsoft Edge in its place.

Edge got off to a promising start, but it’s still lacking a few of the features we’ve come to expect from a modern browser. One of those things was extensions, or little third party tools that can be plugged into the browser interface.

Now Microsoft has dropped the biggest hint yet that Edge extensions are close at hand.

Windows Central has picked up on a tweet by a user named WalkingCat, who managed to capture a Microsoft web page that speaks of Edge extensions.

“Extensions are here!” it claims, rather excitedly. It then goes on to say that “a selection of extensions are available” to members of the Windows Insider Program.

It’s clearly a template website, with no firm release details and some telltale placeholder text. But what’s most telling is that a couple of third party extensions are pictured, suggesting that they’re ready to roll

In particular, there appear to be extensions ready for Pinterest and RES (Reddit Enhancement Suite).

Microsoft initially planned to have its Edge browser extensions ready for the November update, but the latest news is that they’ve been pushed back to early 2016.
