Microsoft In Secret Smartphone Network Talks

So claims one of America's biggest newspapers.

So it’s time to follow up the latest iPhone rumour with some rather intriguing news from Microsoft…

Despite constant denials that it has any plans to create its own smartphone, today no less than the Wall Street Journal is claiming Microsoft is in talks with Verizon to do this very thing.

The WSJ claims the project is codenamed ‘Pink’ and is said to be a touchscreen device (anything like the ZuneHD I wonder?) and will incorporate Marketplace for Mobile which is unveiled earlier this year. Presumably we would also be talking about a Windows Mobile 7 based device because, well, Windows 6.5….

Naturally enough the usual handfuls of NaCl should be taken for now, but given the source I’d certainly treat this one with more credibility than most. Whether it makes sense for Microsoft to potentially alienate partners and do a complete 180 in its approach to the smartphone market however is another matter entirely.

Watch this space. (not literally – that would be rather dull)
