Microsoft HoloLens will see holographic movies follow your every step

You’re watching a film, you need to pee, you don’t want to pause, what do you? Well, with Microsoft HoloLens, you’re entertainment will now follow you around the home.

Detailing new capabilities of its recently unveiled holographic headset, Microsoft used its Build 2015 developer conference to tease a fun new entertainment feature for the futuristic device.

“Today we take the next step in unveiling the Microsoft Holographic Platform,” Alex Kipman, Microsoft’s Tech Fellow for Operating Systems R&D said.

The headset places holographic apps over real-world surfaces such as walls and tabletops. These can then be interacted with in the digital world using a number of voice commands and hand gestures.

With the help of a bearded assistant, Kipman detailed how HoloLens will let you drag a video player from room-to-room with ease. The player will simply follow your movements.

“What if Darren has things to do around the house? He shouldn’t be confirmed to just one wall,” Kipman stated. “He should be able to take his entertainment anywhere and remain hands-free while doing so.

Detailing the process, he added: “All I need to say is ‘follow me’ and now wherever I go in my house, my entertainment tags along.

“When I get to where I want, I simply tap to place it and can scale it as big as I want.”

Despite demoing the feature with an action-packed Mission Impossible trailer, these capabilities are not limited just to the video player.

“This isn’t just something that the video player does, every single universal Windows 10 app has the same capabilities,” Kipman explained.

There is currently no word on when HoloLens will become a consumer-available product.
