Just weeks after the official Windows 8 release date, Microsoft has revealed that it has sold about 40 million Windows 8 user licences so far, marking a strong launch for the multi-platform OS.
The company announced its figures in a speech given by Tami Reller, one of the new co-heads of the Windows unit, at an investor conference held by Credit Suisse.
According to Reuters, Reller added that Windows 8 upgrades are being taken up at a faster rate than Windows 7 when it launched. The price for an upgrade is cheaper than the full software package.
Windows 8 offers a new interface for PCs as well as being optimised for touchscreen devices such as tablets, including the company’s own Microsoft Surface tablet, and certain laptops and desktop PCs. Some of the 40m sales will be OEM versions supplied to PC manufacturers.
There is no official word yet on how well (or not) Surface tablets have been selling. However, by announcing a strong early sign that users are taking up Windows 8, either on existing hardware or through new purchases, it looks like Microsoft is keen to avoid any suggestions that Windows 8 could be a Vista-style flop.
What’s more, Microsoft has also stated that the number of Windows 8 applications has doubled since the OS was launched.
