Microsoft adds Bitcoin support for Xbox and Windows stores

Microsoft has just updated its payment options for its Windows and Xbox stores to include Bitcoin transactions.

The Redmond-based firm’s payment information page now offers guidance on how to redeem Bitcoin via your Microsoft account.

This means customers can now spend their cryptocurrency to buy Xbox games, Windows Phone apps, or videos for your Windows-powered desktop PC.

It comes as a result of Microsoft partnering with BitPay, a US-based Bitcoin processor that has integrated its systems with the firm’s online stores.

Unfortunately the integration doesn’t run too deep, as Microsoft’s stores can’t yet handle direct Bitcoin payments.

The firm writes: “You can only use Bitcoin to add money to your Microsoft account and then purchase digital goods at select Microsoft online stores. You can’t use Bitcoin to purchase Microsoft products and services directly at this time.”

There’s also a $100 cap on Bitcoin transfers for now, which currently translates to an entirely unimpressive sounding 0.2825 Bitcoin.

What’s more, the service is only currently available for Microsoft accounts registered in the United States.

To submit Bitcoin to the mighty Microsoft coffers, you’ll need to have a suitable e-wallet containing some digital dosh, and a computer, smartphone, or other web-enabled device.
