Mercedes-Benz MBUX infotainment system might blow CarPlay away
In the past few years, auto manufacturers have come to rely upon Google and Apple to seamlessly integrate the smartphone experience within the car.
This week, we learned that car makers such as Kia are now building the Google Assistant into cars, while Google itself is expanding Android Auto functionality.
However, not all car makers are giving up on creating compelling infotainment systems for drivers.
At CES 2018, Mercedes-Benz showcased its forthcoming MBUX infotainment system, which will come as standard in the next A-Class. The firm has high hopes that MBUX will negate the need for Apple and Google’s systems.
Through always-listening voice controls, drivers will be able to control navigation, music, the thermostat and even the positioning of their seat.

With the natural-language skills powered by Nuance, Mercedes says it will be the “best conversation you’ve ever had with a car”. All drivers need to do is say “Mercedes” to get started.
Mercedes also says the car will be able to recognise slang such as, “Hey Mercedes, can I wear flip-flops tomorrow?”

The display will also feature stereoscopic 3D tech, offering the illusion of depth, while a graphical picture of the car will make it easier to change settings via the touchscreen.
In addition, it will be possible to update the system over-the-air, Mercedes said on Wednesday.
The A-Class itself will be unveiled in February.
