In a world of £1000 smartphones comes the new EE Hawk, a super-budget smartphone that looks to serve top-notch features for a rock-bottom price.
Earlier this year, Apple debuted the iPhone X, a smartphone that started at £999 and rose to £1,149 for the very top model. That’s a ludicrous amount of money, so EE’s new smartphone is certainly a welcome sight. At just £149.99, it ranks alongside the Motorola Moto G as a cheap way to upgrade your mobile game.
The handset runs on Google’s relatively new Android 7.1 Nougat operating system, and boasts a large 5-inch display with a HD (1280 x 720 pixels) screen. It’s got a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing selfie shooter to boot.
At its heart lives a 1.5GHz Mediatek 6750 processor, supported by 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage. There’s also the option of boosting your storage with a Micro SD card should you find yourself running out of space.
Powering all of this budget computing heft is a fairly generous 2,500mAh battery, which should provide 10 hours of use with a single charge. That means it should make it through an entire day without running dry.
One of the biggest perks, however, is that the Hawk is enabled with Cat. 6 LTE capabilities, which means it supports 4G+ download speeds – that’s a theoretical maximum of 300Mbps. No UK networks are serving such speeds yet, but EE recently managed to dish out a hefty 238Mbps on its special Wembley Stadium live network.
Speaking about the new device, EE Director of Devices Sharon Meadows said: “We’ve built the most advanced mobile network in the UK and we want as many people as possible to enjoy the benefits.”
She continued: “The Hawk gives customers superfast 4G+ speeds, 4G Calling, and Wi-Fi Calling, plus a range of features typically associated with flagship smartphones – all at a fraction of the price.”
Meadows added: “We believe this latest addition to our EE-branded range offers one of the best value smartphone experiences available today.”
The handset goes on sale from December 1 for just £149.99 on EE pay-as-you-go (with a £10 top-up, or from £14.99 per month on a 24-month pay-monthly plan. Every EE Hawk purchase will also include a free pair of JBL headphones too.
Other perks of an EE contract include free BT Sport, UK & Ireland call centres, and six months of free Apple Music membership.
