MediaTek’s new chips aim to bring better gaming to cheaper phones
MediaTek has unveiled two brand new chipsets that are aimed squarely at mobile gamers who want to save a bit of cash.
MediaTek has unveiled two new chipsets in its G-series, named the Helio G70 and Helio G80, both of which are focused on gaming performance thanks to its “HyperEngine” technology, which aims “to boost the mobile gaming experience through eye-popping image quality, the smoothest moves in any online world, and the fastest, most reliable network connections.” These two chips follow the Helio G90T, which was released in July 2019 and featured on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Currently our top pick for the best gaming phone is the Black Shark 2, which has a flagship Snapdragon 855 chip with up to 12GB of RAM, on top of 120Hz touch responsiveness – specifications which belie its very reasonable price. We were also very impressed with the capabilities of the OnePlus 7 Pro, which is not a dedicated gaming phone but nonetheless boasts incredible performance stats. It’s unlikely that these new MediaTek chips can compete with heavy-hitters such as those, but nonetheless we’re looking forward to seeing whether they can offer a strong gaming performance on a modest budget.
