MBI Matchlight is a torch the size of a match

This is the MBI Matchlight, the world’s smallest production flashlight.

As the name suggests, it’s the size of a match. What’s more, it comes in a set of eight in a matchbook-style holder. Each has a magnetic base, allowing it to attach to any metal surface, and the LED is available in a variety of colours, including white, red and green.

Each lasts about eight hours. Sadly, the Matchlight isn’t rechargeable. Still, with 64 hours of light from a pack of eight, the Matchlights will last far longer than a standard set of matches.

They’re waterproof, too, so you can use them in the rain – invaluable if you’re off camping.

But the real selling point is convenience. They’re size allows you to keep them on you at all times; you could even stash them in your wallet. Then should your car break down, or you need a light while camping, you’ll never be left stranded.

Of course, most smartphones have a torch function, but this will avoid sapping battery life for other uses such as calling people, or looking up directions.

The MBI Mtachlight has raised more than $8,000 of a $10,000 target, with 23 days to go. Pledge $28 (£20) and a pack can be yours on an early bird. If successful, it will ship in July.
