Market The Force, Luke

Performance PC manufacturer Alienware makes us choose between the Lightside and the Darkside of The Force with its new themed desktops.

Star Wars, it really is a case of love and hate: Lightside verses Darkside, Episodes IV to VI verses I and II, 80s George Lucas verses 21st century George Lucas. Still, the franchise has a massive following and it amazes me that we haven’t seen a Star Wars themed PC before now. We haven’t though, so Alienware has put that right.

The pictures above and below don’t really need any explanation (unless you are particularly slow, and I could never accuse TR readers of that), but the Sky Wars influence runs deeper than these striking cases. Both Lightside and Darkside variants are packed with Star Wars content such as movie soundtracks, exclusive wallpapers and desktop skins.

Full hardware specs are not yet available, but we do know Alienware will be targeting the hardcore end of the market since the barebones consist of AMD Athlon 64 FX processors and nVidia SLI graphics technology.

Personally speaking, however, I would’ve liked to see Alienware really carry its Lightside and Darkside themes to the limit. I’m talking about an Intel processor in one machine, AMD processor in the other, nVidia graphics card verses ATI graphics card, Corsair memory verses Crucial memory, the full works. Of course, which manufacturers you would install where is open to some controversy, but I figure the idea has (X) wings.

Alienware hasn’t revealed when it will sate our desires to have Han Solo or Darth Vader scribbled onto our PCs, while pricing also remains a mystery. I’m going to go out on a limb here though and say I reckon it might have ”some kind” of loose tie in with Episode III…

Revenge of the Sith premieres 19 May.
