LoveFilm launches on Nintendo Wii U for HD streaming

Just days after the belated LoveFilm for Nintendo Wii launch, Amazon’s LoveFilm movie streaming service has now been made available on the new Nintendo Wii U console.

The key difference between the two Nintendo bound services, is that the Nintendo Wii U package offers an HD output, so LoveFilm Instant subscribers can watch any of the HD movies and TV shows that are available for higher quality streaming (providing you have a reasonably good broadband connection).

The LoveFilm Instant app will be pre-installed on the Nintendo Wii U dashboard. As with the normal Wii version, members can watch, search and browse from streaming catalogue. It also supports the Watch List feature for adding titles to a personalised queue for quick access later.

Another significant difference is that the app takes advantage of the Nintendo Wii U GamePad, so you can watch video on the controller’s own screen as well as on the TV, or use it to look up more information about films and TV series, such as cast lists and episode guides.

It means the UK-based LoveFilm can compete more equally with Netflix, which had a Nintendo Wii U app almost immediately after the console’s recent debut. A LoveFilm Instant subscription is currently £4.99 a month, which undercuts its various rivals, and there’s a 30-day free trial for new users.

It joins the existing LoveFilm apps for platforms including the Xbox 360, Sony PS3, iPad, Kindle Fire HD and smart TVs.
