The Cash Money record label, which manages rap artist Lil Wayne, is suing hip-hop star Jay Z’s music streaming service Tidal.
According to Cash Money, Tidal has no right to be hosting Lil Wayne’s Free Weezy Album (FWA), which launched – and went live on Tidal – on July 4.
As a result, Cash Money is demanding $50 million from Tidal, which could mean bad news for the streaming service.
The suit claims that Cash Money owns exclusive rights to Wayne’s music. As such,
Tidal, however, says Lil Wayne personally offered FWA to Tidal on an exclusive basis. That was reportedly in exchange for a stake in the company.
The lawsuit describes Tidal’s relationship with Lil Wayne as “a desperate and illegal attempt to save their struggling streaming service.”

Somewhat confusingly, Lil Wayne posted a link to his album on Tidal through Twitter, and even had the grace to hashtag the streaming service.
That’s probably because Lil Wayne and the Cash Money label aren’t on best terms; they previously battled over the release of his Tha Carter V album, resulting in the artist suing the label for $51 million.
