LG Z flexible screen smartphone to launch in October

LG has revealed that it’s almost ready to launch the world’s first flexible screen smartphone, the LG Z.

It seems as if the next major technical innovation in smartphones – or one of them, at least – is flexible displays that will add strength and portability to these brittle bricks we carry around.

Samsung last week announced that it would be launching a special edition of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with a curved display in October.

But Samsung’s local rival LG appears to be set to trump the old master with its own announcement. The Korean manufacturer has leaked details of a new flexible screen device to ZDNet Korea.

The LG Z will have a concave curved display, and has allegedly already entered into production. It is expected to launch later this month.

Of course, neither the LG Z nor the aforementioned special edition Samsung will be the full realisation of the flexible screen ideal. They will still be rigid devices, and will simply use the flexible screen technology to produce smartphone displays with greater strength and smaller bezels.

Other major smartphone components, such as circuit boards and batteries, still need to catch up in the flexibility stakes before we can truly consider smartphones that can be rolled up like a scroll.

Both the LG Z and the flexible Samsung Galaxy Note 3 are expected to be limited edition devices, as neither manufacturer can produce the flexible OLED displays in great quantity as yet.
