LG Optimus 4X HD Quad-Core Phone Announced

Read our comprehensive hands-on preview of the LG Optimus 4X HD from Mobile World Congress.

LG has already announced the huge 5in Optimus Vu smartphone, three L-Style Android phones and the Optimus 3D Max ahead of Mobile World Congress (MWC) next week, but we felt sure it was saving its flagship smartphone for the show itself.

SAdly for those heading out to Barcelona, the cat has already been let out of the bag as the South Korean company couldn’t keep the lid on the LG Optimus 4X HD any longer and has announced it ahead of the show.

The LG Optimus 4X HD, previously know as the LG X3, is the follow up to the Optimus 2X and as you might infer from the names the processor inside the new phone has been boosted from the dual-core Tegra 2 to the quad-core Tegra 3, running at 1.5GHz.

Also indicated in the name is the quality of the screen. The Optimus 4X HD will have a large 4.7in IPS display with a resolution of 1,280×720. Despite the screen from 4in in the 2X to 4.7in in the 4X HD, LG has still managed to slim the overall thickness of the phone down from 10.9mm to just 8.9mm.

The Optimus 4X HD will come with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of local storage, an eight megapixel camera on the rear, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, support for DLNA and MHL, and will run the latest version of Android, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich.

The phone will come with a large 2150mAh battery and in combination with the fifth ‘companion core’ on the Tegra 3 chip, this should ensure pretty decent battery life for the new phone.

LG has said the Optimus 4X HD will be coming to Europe in the second quarter of 2012 but there is no word on pricing yet.

We’ll be getting our hands on the new flagship phone from LG at MWC in Barcelona in a few days time and will bring you our first impressions of the new device very soon.
