LG Launches Budget Full Touchscreen Handset

Everything else, a mystery.

LG has been shaking up the mobile phone market in recent years and hasn’t forgotten those of us on a budget either with the first five megapixel PAYG handset and now it wants everyone to enjoy touchscreen too…

With the launch of the ‘KP500’ the company claims to have “the most affordable full touchscreen handset in the UK” and really that’s about all we can say about that.

“What?” I hear you cry. “The price would be nice and a few specifications, no?” Well, yeah but you see LG hasn’t given any. No RRP, no contract details and no specs unless you count information such as “slim and lightweight… a chic black casing and sleek titanium rim… four frequency bands (so no 3G then)… embedded stylus… QWERTY on-screen keyboard… auto-rotating display (ie, an accelerometer)“.

That be your lot, apart the obvious microSD slot and a fairly logical company quote: “Full touchscreen handsets have proved to be popular with UK consumers. As a relatively new technology, it has only been available on premium handsets which inevitably have premium price tags,” said LG Head of Mobile Marketing Jeremy Newing. “With our new LG-KP500, we are offering this technology to a broader range of consumers who want a high spec touchscreen device that is easy to use and affordable.”

But Jeremy what “high spec”? Are touchscreens which require a stylus still considered “easy to use”? And what is “affordable” if there’s no price?

That said, the KP500 looks perfectly nice on a superficial basis and I’m guessing it’ll be in the sub £80 bracket on PAYG – call it intuition. We’ll know (a lot) more when the KP500 touches down by the end of October – after all, we could hardly know less. On which networks? You guessed it: no idea!

Ultimately I’m not sure I’ve ever written so much on so little…
