LG has announced a new wireless charging pad that could provide significant clues about next year’s LG G6 smartphone.
Today, LG revealed the aptly named Quick Wireless Charging Pad, which does exactly what it says on the tin. The 15W pad works using the Wireless Power Consortium’s Qi charging standard, and can charge a completely empty battery to 50% in less than 30 minutes, apparently.
But what’s interesting is that LG’s currently flagship smartphone, the LG G5, doesn’t support Qi wireless charging. In fact, it doesn’t support any wireless charging standard. That’s why we’re open to the possibility that the LG G6 might finally add a feature that’s already available on rival handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S7.

The new wireless charging pad is set to go on sale in the US, Europe, and Australia in the middle of October. Speaking at the announcement, Sung Huh, LG’s Electronic Components lead, said: “We proved that we had the world’s best wireless charging technology. As a wireless charging module is directly related to the convenience and safety of the users, we will meet the expectations of our customers with advanced performance and perfect product quality.”
LG is expected to announce the LG G6 next year, during Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress technology tradeshow, which begins on February 27. We’ve heard very little about the next phone, other than that a major design overhaul may be in the works, given the tepid reception of this year’s LG G5.
