LG G5 Update: What’s new in first-ever software update?

LG has started rolling out the very first software update for its 2016 flagship – the LG G5.

The new software is currently arriving on handsets in Asia, and will land on devices in North America and Europe “over the next several weeks”.

The LG G5 became available to buy in early April this year, so a month-long turnaround for the first update isn’t too bad.

“Our priority is consumer satisfaction, and issuing software updates within a month of launch shows how determined we are to future-proof the G5 and Friends through continuous support and development,” says Chris Yie, VP and marketing boss for LG Mobile. “We will continue to offer optimal mobile experiences to our consumers by enhancing the functionality of both the G5 and Friends with quick responses to their needs.”

So what’s new in LG’s first-ever software update for the LG G5?

Change #1 – The app drawer returns

Back by popular demand, the LG G5 now has its very own app drawer. It was a familiar feature in previous LG smartphones, but was curiously omitted in the LG G5 at launch.

It was possible to acquire the app drawer as a download at LG SmartWorld previously, but the feature is now available to all LG G5 owners through this over-the-air update.

“Rather than overwriting the original home layout,” LG explains, “the update will appear as ‘Home & app drawer’ under the G5’s home setting once the optional download is confirmed.”

LG says that if you prefer the original layout without the app drawer, you can change this by selecting ‘Home’ in the settings.

Change #2 – Burst shooting on CAM Plus

The second change in the first LG G5 update is the addition of a “burst” – or continuous – mode when you’re using the LG CAM Plus module.

The LG CAM Plus is a camera module for the LG G5, one of the few launch modules available for the device.

“With burst mode and LG CAM Plus, aspiring shutterbugs can capture up to 10 shots per second, up to a maximum of 30 frames, for a more DSLR-like shooting experience.”
