LG is working on a foldable smartphone to rival the upcoming Samsung Galaxy X

Just like Samsung, LG is developing a new-age clamshell smartphone that’s equipped with a foldable screen, rather than a T9 keyboard, according to a new report.

LG has drawn up the blueprints for a sizeable smartphone – expected to measure in at around 7-inches – that can be folded in half to make it more comfortable to transport, which is the direction Samsung is now rumoured to be headed in with the elusive Galaxy X.

In a patent filing uncovered by LetsGoDigital, LG explains how it’s developed a new hinge mechanism and a flexible circuit board that allows the screen to be folded at the midpoint, automatically turning the screen on when it’s unfolded and off when it’s flipped closed.

When the handset is in the resting position, a number of magnets located at the top and bottom will hold it closed, ensuring it doesn’t unravel in a bag or pocket – thus protecting the screen from any objects that could come into contact with it in transit.

What’s strange, however, is that the firm notes that the unit is equipped with a camera on the front, though the module is not depicted in the renders, nor does LG explain how it intends to integrate it. Some tipsters believe it could be taking an in-screen approach.

There’s no information pertaining to when LG will take the wraps off its first foldable smartphone. It’s said on more than one occasion, however, that it will only launch new smartphones when it deems them necessary, rather than at the same time as its competitors.
