LG Details 8MP, Multitouch ‘Crystal’ Handset

Features galore in what looks like a surprise hit to us...

We got a brief look at the LG Crystal (GD900) back in February but now specifications and features are here we are far more impressed than we expected to be…

With its tempered glass touchpad and transparent sliding keys it seemed the Crystal was little more than a gimmick and while we’ll hold off on an verdict until it’s in our hands it is surprisingly high end. Things that immediately catch my eye are the eight megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash along with 7.2Mbit HSDPA, WiFi, aGPS and the company’s much touted S-Class 3D UI – the same love it/hate it interface which debuted on the LG Arena.

Also of importance is the ‘Crystal Touchpad’ which is made out of tempered glass and allows users to configure their own gesture based shortcuts. For example, ‘M’ could be set to go to the multimedia player, ‘B’ to the browser. Yes, a little cheesy but it could prove handy nonetheless. More practically, the touchpad can be used in a multi-touch manner to zoom in and out of webpages, photos and even video with the – now standard – pinch gesture. Other uses are a ‘Mouse mode’ when surfing the web where the touchpad works just like that seen in a laptop and there’s an iPod-esque touch wheel movement for scrolling menus and tracks or adjusting the volume. Lastly, finger writing recognition is built in too for those who really hate T9.

Elsewhere you’ll find a 3in WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) ”capacitive” touchscreen (everyone is learning), accelerometer, full page rendering web browser, FM tuner, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and a 32GB compatible microSD expansion slot to augment the 1.5GB found onboard. Talk time is quoted at up to four hours over 3G (six hours over 2G) with a potential 300 hours on standby while video can be recorded at a resolution of up to 720 x 480 pixels at 30 frames per second. As for the size and weight it won’t be tearing too many pockets at 105 x 52.5 x 13.5 mm and 127g.

Yes, the LG Crystal does have its gimmicks but with an imminent July release date at exclusive partner the Carphone Warehouse no one’s laughing anymore‚Ķ
