LG denies Huawei partnership rumours

LG has openly denied rumours it is looking to partner with Huawei to boost its mobile business.

A partnership between LG and Huawei was suggested by an analyst to the Korea Times, saying LG was keen to work with Huawei to “revive its smartphone business.”

LG has rebuffed the statement, saying such a partnership would be nonsensical.

“[The company has had] no discussions now or in the past with Huawei on any aspects of LG Electronics’ business,” said LG in a statement to The Verge.

Usually companies opt for the standard PR line of not commenting on rumours or speculations, but obviously LG feels very passionate about this particular subject.

However, an LG spokesperson did suggest the company believes it hasn’t quite made the smartphone impact it intends to.

“Gaps in our smartphone portfolios used to be one of the biggest problems that prevents us from succeeding in the market for the past few years,” said the LG spokesperson to the Korea Times. “But this problem has been fixed. Attention is being shifted to how we see an external growth in handsets.”

LG has launched various smartphones over the past year in an attempt to fix the holes in its smartphone portfolio.

The flagship LG G2 receive plenty of critical acclaim and showed great potential for the South Korean electronics manufactuer, but hasn’t seen this success translate into physical sales.

At the beginning of the year, Huawei overtook LG in the IDC global smartphone shipment report, suggesting LG had a lot to fix over the course of 2013.

LG struggles to achieve the market saturation in the entry-level sector, which is a key market for Huawei in particular.
