Apple has been inadvertently credited with bringing the so-called notch design into the mainstream with the iPhone X, but LG wants you to know it thought of the idea first.
Speaking at the LG G7 ThinQ‘s unveiling in South Korea on May 3, the firm’s Mobile CEO Hwang Jeong-hwan said: “We planned the notch design before Apple,” adding that it prefers not to call it a notch as it indicates that something is missing.
The small cut-out is internally known as “a second display.”
But there’s no way to tell which manufacturer thought of the design first. Sure, we can trawl through the various patent filings, but all that does is tell us when each company reserved its approach, not when it was thought of by the design team.

Hwang also used the gathering as an opportunity tot tease a new feature headed to the LG G7 ThinQ in the near future: an AR-based emoji engine to rival that of Animoji on the iPhone X, and AR Emoji on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus.
“They can be updated later and will be available both on the G7 and other preceding models to meet the demand of consumers who want a longer lifespan for their smartphones, ” Hwang told The Investor when asked about its absence.
