LG has confirmed that it will launch the world’s first curved OLED TV in June.
The LG 55EA9800 is a 55-inch OLED TV set that’s only 4.3mm thin, and weighs just 17kg. It will hit South Korean shops in June, with pre-orders starting from today.
As you might expect from such pioneering TV technology, the LG 55EA9800 won’t come cheap. It will cost a cool $13,500 when it launches this summer – a hefty $3,000 hike over the standard LG OLED TV currently available in the US.

So why do you need a TV with a curved display? It’s intended to create that IMAX-like panoramic sensation, enveloping you in the film, sporting event or nature documentary playing out in front of you. Naturally this effect will work best with Full HD content.
There’s no news on a launch outside of LG‘s native South Korea at this point, other than the fact that it’s coming “in the months ahead.” You can bet that the US will get first dibs on the LG 55EA9800 when it finally does hit the west.
LG uncovered the TV back in January at the CES 2013 show in Las Vegas. At that time, we were told by LG’s Hung W.K. Shin that curved OLED TV sets would be coming to the UK soon.
The company is planning to bigger than 55-inch too, which would certainly make sense with the whole home-IMAX concept.
