Let Them Surf 8

...I wish ISP Wanadoo had screamed when it announced this mega flat rate speed increase.

I bet I know what those of you who have jetted into this article directly via RSS are thinking: 8Mbps? So what, there’s ADSL2+ now. Well no clever clogs, Wanadoo as declared it is to make 8Mbps the standard connection speed for all its connections. ”Ahhhh…”.

Even more impressive is the news that it won’t cost users a penny more to upgrade, with basic packages beginning from just £14.99 for the first six months and £17.99 thereafter. You’ll also get Wanadoo’s VoIP package bundled with it, plus with “Wireless & Talk” (the company’s telephone service) there’s free evening and weekend calls to any UK landline and free nattering 24/7 to other Wireless & Talk users. The only downer is this package caps usage to 2GB per month, but choose the £22.99 or £27.99 monthly price plans and this will increase to 6GB and 30GB respectively.

Technically there is another disappointment, though it is not really Wanadoo’s fault. Since the company’s service hops on the back of BT’s unbundled lines it can only supply 8Mbps to customers in areas where the former monopolist has got its act together. Obviously, inhabitants of major cities will the first to benefit, but hopes are high that as much as half the population will be enabled within the next 12 months.

Wanadoo is advertising the service now, with plans to role it out as early as November. Interested? You can sign up here and perform a speed and availability check here.
