IBM's infamous branding lives on!
Considering it purchased IBM way back in 2005 (effectively the Dark Ages by computer-time) I find it hard to believe that Lenovo has waited until now to attach the infamous (like famous, but better) ‘Think’ branding to a new product. In fact, the ThinkStation is the first new ‘Think’ brand to be created in five years according to Lenovo. It also supposedly makes the company the first to enter the workstation market in a decade.
Based on Intel’s forthcoming Xeon 5400-series processors for the S10 range of systems and the just-released Core 2 Extreme QX9650 for the D10 range the machines certainly wont be lacking in power. Graphics grunt will be provided by nVidia and presumably in the form of a Quadro FX solution, although no actual card is specified in the press release.
Clearly these systems aren’t designed for the average Joe consumer, but considering how favourably the ThinkPad has survived the Lenovo takeover one would hope that the ThinkStation should prove a worthwhile investment for the serious 3D designer; or you could just fancy trying to best the PS3 at Folding@Home. The systems will be available in Janurary, at least stateside, from upwards on $1,119 and $1,739 for the S10 and D10 respectively.
