Lenovo Branded PCs Break Cover

Lenovo may be keeping the IBM brand for the ThinkPads and ThinkCenters, but the Chinese giant is ready to build its own brand.

The Lenovo 3000 notebook range will kick off with the C100. This is a general purpose machine aimed at the small business user. There is a range of processors available, but conspicuous by its absence is Intel’s latest Core Duo chip. That said, Lenovo is clearly trying to address a price sensitive market here, so that decision is understandable.

There’s a 15in TFT screen with a resolution of 1,024 x 768, a choice of 40, 60, 80 or 100GB hard disk, a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive or DVD writer and up to 1GB of system memory. At 2.8kg, the C100 isn’t the lightest machine to carry around with you, but it’s in roughly the same ballpark as an R Series ThinkPad.

The eagle eyed among you will notice that the trademark TrackPoint is missing from this Lenovo branded machine. This is a conscious decision made by Lenovo to differentiate between the Lenovo 3000 series and the ThinkPads.

Following the launch of the C100, we’ll see the arrival of the N100 in April and the V100 in May. The result will be a complete range of affordable Lenovo branded notebooks covering general purpose, thin and light and widescreen machines.
