Leather-Clad Asus Gets Us Excited

Asus unveils leather clad notebooks and hops on board with Lamborghini.

At a press briefing yesterday, Asus invited a motley crew of journalists to see its new range of notebooks and TrustedReviews was happy to joing the throng. The highlights included the Lamborghini VX1 notebook (below), no doubt intended to compete with Acer’s Ferrari range and in a more ground-breaking move, several leather-clad notebooks such as the S6.

Above we see the S6 looking pretty in pink, though Asus could not confirm if a pink version will actually appear on the UK market. In the light of day the pink is a lot darker and looks quite stylish – trust us, these photos don’t do it justice!

Traditionally, Asus has always focused on technology and features rather than design but the presentations we were shown put a lot more emphasis on branding and aesthetics. While high design values are a Good Thing, this is a worrying shift, especially when its new Intel-esque jingle was demonstrated. Although it aims to bring better design throughout its range, Asus assured us, that as much effort will be put into the technological aspects as the marketing. Asus claimed that it wants to make sure its prices are kept at a reasonable level but the prices quoted to us were in the £1600-2000 range so time will tell.

Marcus Wierzoch from Asus’ 50 strong design team walked us through the multiple stages in the design process. Considering that is is one of the only notebook manufacturers that actually make its own laptops from scratch, this was an insightful process. Having seen what goes into it, it’s amazing that products ever get to the market on time and we can see why most companies opt to re-badge instead.
