Kodi 18 Leia gets Google Assistant integration — here’s how to try it now

The next major version of Kodi will feature Google Assistant integration for users running the media management platform on Android TV devices.

That means Kodi 18 users will have  voice controlled access to their media collections and recommendations powered by Google’s AI helper.

Android TV owners will have the luxury of shouting “Hey Google” and asking Kodi what to play. It’ll also cross reference with other popular apps like Netflix and YouTube.

The Suggested Recommendations integration will enable Kodi content to sit alongside movies and TV shows from the other key Android TV apps.

So, for example, if you’ve been watching The Godfather on Google Play Movies and have The Godfather Part II sitting in your Kodi library, you may see that suggestion crop up.

Of course, it’s important to remember an Android TV enabled television or streaming device will be needed to access the Google Assistant.

Retro games too

Previously the company announced it will be adding a retro games console emulator called RetroPlayer within Kodi 18.

The launch will be accompanied by a new third-party add-on called the Internet Archive ROM Launcher, which will enable Kodi users to download games.

Of course that will raise more questions about piracy, but for those who own physical copies of the older games, it might be an easy way to play them without hooking up the old consoles.

Codenamed Leia (in memorandum of the late, great Carrie Fisher) the software is currently being tested among alpha users.

It’s available to download now, but we’d only advise jumping on board if you’re happy to deal with some bugs and glitches. The firm is yet to announce when the full version will be rolling out to the community.
