Knocki makes any surface smart

Smart home technology is quickly turning our homes into pads of the future. The only downside is the number of interfaces you have to deal with. Knocki aims to solve that problem.

It turns any surface into a control centre for your devices. Just attach it to a wall, table, door, piece of furniture or countertop, and it’ll turn said surface into a touch-sensitive interface. Then start tapping and you can control your smart home devices.

Pretty neat, eh? The only problem is you might get fingerprints all over your nice clean wall…

You’ll have to programme the controls yourself. Maybe you want one tap to switch the lights on, two to find your phone, three to set the thermostat to a preset temperature, and so on. You can also get a notification on your phone if someone knocks on your door or delivers some post, activate your security alarm, play music, set or snooze an alarm clock and start the coffee machine brewing.

Obviously it’s way more useful if you have smart home kit like a Nest thermostat and Philips Hue lightbulbs, but it can also perform plenty of functions without them.

It’s shot past its funding goal and still has 42 days to go. Pledge $79 (£54) and you can pick one up on an early bird. It’ll ship in December.
