Kindle users could lose internet if they don’t update

Some Amazon Kindle devices will be forced offline if they don’t update to the latest software version.

Amazon has sent out a warning to customers who own older Kindle devices, urging them to update their software before March 22.

“Customers using an outdated software version on Kindle e-readers, or that have not connected wirelessly since October 5, 2015, require an important software update by March 22, 2016, in order to continue to download Kindle books and use Kindle services,” says Amazon on a related forum post.

If customers don’t heed this warning, they will receive an error message stating that the device cannot connect at this time. After this point, users will have to connect their Kindle up to their computer and initiate a manual update in order to restore connectivity.

Not being able to connect to the internet will mean no access to the Kindle Store for downloading new books. It will also mean that you can’t access your existing cloud library.

Essentially, this warning applies to you if your Kindle dates from 2012 or earlier, which includes any device from the first Kindle Paperwhite back. This means that eight out of the twelve Kindle devices released to date could be cut off from the internet if not updated now.
