Kindle gets a price cut – now £69

Once again, Amazon has shortchanged us UK gadget fans a bit. Following Amazon’s big press conference yesterday, we’re going to miss out on the Kindle Paperwhite and the 8.9in version of the Kindle Fire HD. However, we do get to enjoy a price cut on the button’ed Kindle, which is now just £69.

Amazon has cut the price of the non-touchscreen Kindle from £89 to £69, making it one of the cheapest E-ink readers in the UK. To go with the new price, Amazon seems to have darkened the bezel of the classic design, in-line with the look of the new Kindle Paperwhite. However, the lighter version is still available to order online.

Aside from this minor tweak, though, the ereader appears to be exactly the same as it was before, with three-week battery life, a 6in 600 x 800 resolution display and lightweight 170g frame. It also offers Wi-Fi, to let you download books without the help of a computer. We loved the 2011 Kindle at review, back in October 2011, giving it a hearty recommendation and 9/10 score.

At present, the new-design £69 Kindle is only available to pre-order, set to ship on 12 September.

Yesterday Amazon also unveiled its next-generation Kindle Fire tablets. The one we’re due to get in the UK is a 7in model that’s comparable with the Google Nexus 7, with a 1,280 x 800 pixel screen and a modified version of the Google Android OS running at its core.

We in the UK miss out on a few of Amazon’s most exciting new bits, though, including the Kindle Paperwhite and the 8.9in Kindle Fire. The Paperwhite E-ink reader features a subtly lit screen, and larger Kindle Fire offers such fancy features as 64GB of internal memory and 4G LTE connectivity.
