Kindle Fire 2 Release Date Set for July?

Amazon’s second Kindle Fire tablet is due to be revealed next month according to the latest rumours. It’s set to appear on July 31, a date that makes sense given the recent opening-up of the Amazon Appstore in new territories, including the UK.

According to a “credible source” cited by CNET, the Kindle Fire 2 will be revealed at a launch event on July 31. Quite why this source has such insight isn’t explained, but CNET isn’t a typical rumour-churning publication.

The source also states that the second Kindle Fire tablet will feature a camera and physical volume controls. Amazon’s current model left out the camera in order to lower cost, and uses on-screen volume controls.

The first Kindle Fire has not been released in the UK, but as the Amazon Appstore was recently confirmed for launch here, you can bet this second one will. This Appstore is used by the Amazon tablet in place of the official Google Play app store. Using a “third-party” app store lets Amazon brand the device further and also saves on certification costs – getting Google Play and Google apps on a device involves an expensive consultation process that most low-cost tablets avoid.

Other recent rumours suggest the new Kindle Fire tablet will keep the 7in screen size, but will up the screen resolution from 1,024 x 600 to 1,280 x 800 pixels. If Amazon packs-in expandable memory too, it could well become the budget tablet to own.
